Pergola Maintenance Guide: Care Tips to Extend Its Lifespan
by Pergolas Canarias
A pergola is a long-term investment. With minimal but proper maintenance, you can extend its useful life by several years and keep it looking like new.
Bioclimatic pergola maintenance
Aluminum louvers (every 6 months)
- Clean with warm water and mild soap, using a soft cloth or sponge
- Avoid abrasive products or solvents
- Check that watertight seals are clean and unobstructed
- Verify the drainage channel is free of leaves or debris
Motorized system (every 12 months)
- Check the tubular motor and electrical connections
- Lubricate louver joints with silicone spray
- Verify proper functioning of wind and rain sensors
Standard pergola (awning) maintenance
Canvas (every 3 months in coastal areas, every 6 months inland)
- Clean with low-pressure water and mild soap
- Do not use bleach or chlorinated products
- Let dry completely before retracting
- Inspect seams and fixing eyelets
Aluminum frame (every 6 months)
- Clean profiles with water and soap
- Check ground or wall anchors
- Inspect awning tensioners and fixings
Special care in the Canary Islands
The marine environment is more aggressive on any outdoor material. We recommend:
- More frequent cleaning: double the inland frequency (salt spray accumulates)
- Fresh water rinse: after windstorms with sand, rinse the structure
- Hardware inspection: once a year, check for signs of corrosion on screws and fixings
- Canvas retracted during storms: although they withstand moderate winds, during severe weather warnings it’s best to retract the canvas
