Prepare Your Terrace for Winter: Climate Control Guide
Winter in the Canary Islands is mild, but nights get cool and windy days can ruin an outdoor dinner. With the right solutions, your terrace is enjoyable 365 days a year.
The enclosure: the key to winter
A lateral glass enclosure (sliding or guillotine) is the best winter investment. When you close the panels, you create a wind-protected space that retains heat. When the midday sun comes out, you open them and have an open terrace again.
Outdoor heaters
Terrace heaters have evolved significantly. Current options:
| Type | Advantages | Estimated consumption |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling infrared | Heats people and objects, not air; immediate effect | 1500-2000W |
| Gas (cylinder) | Powerful, good option for large terraces | 12.5kg cylinder (~30h) |
| Electric freestanding | Easy to move, economical | 2000-2500W |
Recommendation: for terraces with a pergola, ceiling infrared heaters are ideal: they take up no floor space and integrate discreetly into the structure.
Winter awnings
If you don’t have a glass enclosure, a more economical option is transparent PVC or thick canvas lateral awnings that block the wind. They install on the pergola sides and can be rolled up in spring.
Textiles and accessories
- Outdoor blankets: keep a couple of thick blankets for guests
- Rugs: insulate from cold floors and add visual warmth
- Cushions: waterproof covers with quick-dry filling
Warm lighting
It gets dark earlier in winter. Good LED lighting integrated into the pergola (2700-3000K, warm light) creates a cozy atmosphere that invites you to stay outside even when it’s cool.
With a modest investment in climate control, you double the months of terrace use. At Pergolas Canarias we advise you with no obligation.
